First Aid Kits

The worst first aid kit is the one that never gets made. Nearly as bad is the kit that never gets used during an emergency. Emergencies are what first-aid kits are for. It is a mistake to think that a small first-aid kit will have the supplies needed to treat large wounds.

If you check at home you will probably find first-aid supplies, but usually these supplies are incomplete or scattered. They should be together in one place and in one well marked container.

Depending on the situation, you may need different supplies. Accidents in the home are often different from camping or sports situations. At home, the makings of an ice pack can be found in the freezer. At the local ball field or on a remote camping trip, a chemical ice pack would be invaluable.

Consider the potential injuries that can occur where you might need special supplies when you plan for specific activities.

Have you ever gone to your first aid kit to get something only to be reminded that it was used the last time. Periodically review the condition of your first aid kits. Replace used supplies. Review expiration dates on medication and replace if the date is about to expire. Old medication can be inaffective or even potentially dangerous.

The following tables provide examples of the contents for different First Aid Kits for different situations.
